My Story

Elizabeth

How do I tell a story that has brought my life full circle within a few short months? My name is Elizabeth and in 2003, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

My life was humming along with a great family and two wonderful children. We had a busy and fulfilling life. Trips to Nantucket, football and soccer games. I was able to provide a myriad of opportunities to my children. We were happy and thriving. My life was wonderful.

Then I found the lump. "Breast Cancer" is what the doctor said. I can still hear the words.

In the spring of 2003, my doctor at Beth Israel Hospital, in Boston, MA, gave me a diagnosis of Breast Cancer. There was a large tumor, but I had no reason to think that this was cancer. There was no history of cancer in my family, let alone Breast Cancer. The diagnosis was very difficult to accept. I never thought this could happen to me… I had so many questions. Why me?  How did this happen? What do I need to do to make it go away? What does a Breast Cancer diagnosis mean? I had no idea about the journey I was about to embark upon.

I was faced with the most difficult decisions I would ever make. I realized then, my life was about to change forever.

What follows is the tale of this journey and how I’ve found a way to cope with Breast Cancer, add some clarity to my life and how my contributions to the fight began.

While in the midst of an aggressive chemotherapy regimen, we celebrated my daughter’s birthday. During the party, my friend Michele, introduced us to the art of jewelry making. It was on this day, that I made my first Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelet for my mother and "BNPink" was born.

My Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets ™ are made from Bali Sterling Silver, Swarovski crystals and genuine cultured pearls. A Cancer Awareness ribbon, to symbolize hope, adorns each one.

The Bracelets gave me strength. I started to make them for all the women in my life who gave me such incredible support while I was undergoing treatment for this disease. I could never in my life, have gotten through this without them!

My mother Lillian, listened to my never-ending complaints about the devastating side effects from the Chemotherapy and got me through to the end.  She was always with me on treatment days.

My daughter Scarlett and son Taylor, were there with me through many dark days. They always make my day brighter with their love for their mom.

My niece Elizabeth, lived with me all summer and helped me manage my family and cope with this diagnosis.

Sylvia, my sister, best friend and nurse midwife, was always a phone call away, never too busy to answer any of my questions.

Gloria, my incredible friend and neighbor, got me to laugh like no one else when I didn’t think I could. She was with me from the very first step of diagnosis, through surgery and more. Often times, she would run over in her pajamas to be there for me, or my children in my time of need!

Cathy, Michele, Mary, Regina, Margaret, Julia, Debbie, Mel, Kristin and Sharon G are just some of the many wonderful friends that stepped forward to support me. My friends and family are invaluable.

My story is not unique. I am one of hundreds of thousands of women who experience a diagnosis of Breast Cancer. I am fortunate to have a great support network. When I can provide an ounce of hope, courage or strength to one person it fills my soul. I am now able to contribute to the fight in a meaningful way.

I’m hopeful that by the time our daughters reach adulthood, there will be a cure for this insidious disease.

At least that is my prayer…

I started making my Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets™ on an impulse. In a very short time, I have donated over $28,000.00 through the sale of these bracelets. 20% of the proceeds from the sale of my Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets™ goes directly to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This is my way to see that my prayer gets answered. Please join me in our fight. Let’s find a way together to win this battle.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Mcquade from Be in the Pink
